Using Pinterest to Boost Creativity in Your Writing

Posted by on Jan 19, 2016 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

I always think of my third novel, Unexpected Peril, when I’m asked if I’ve ever suffered from writer’s block. Although the story was mostly in my head, I could not start writing it. I needed creatures to do certain things, but I had a problem designing those creatures. By designing, I mean coming up with where they lived, how they dressed, what they ate, and pretty much everything that makes a society.

The plot had been in my head for over a year before it came time to sit down and write it out. After a couple of weeks in the planning stage during summer break with my children at home, I finally took a hot bath and looked at art on Pinterest. One picture took me to another, and another, and another . . . By the time I stepped out of the tub, I had a private Pinterest board filled with swamp pictures and a fresh desire to start writing. Just like that, the block disappeared. I just needed to get my brain to start visualizing, and Pinterest is filled with pictures of almost everything.

Need research on a swamp? How about an ocean? Pinterest saved me and got my writing juices flowing again. I suggest keeping at least one private board and fill it with pictures that inspire your writing. Once your novel is out, you can move the pins to a public board to represent the book. You can check out my Unexpected Peril Pinterest board if you want.

Does YA Mean It’s a Clean Read?

Posted by on Jan 12, 2016 in Clean Reads | 10 comments

The answer is no. Books are not regulated and graded like movies, music, and video games, and it’s up to the authors and publishers to choose the genre. A young adult novel usually means the main characters are in their teen years. However, some books with older characters can pass as a young adult read if they’re clean–such as the Alissia Roswell Series.

Although most people believe a young adult book keeps to certain standards–no sex, low violence, and mild cursing–that’s not the case. I’ve stopped reading many books  only halfway through, because I was disgusted with the hard cursing, sexual content, and lack of morals in the main characters. I know of one book that I put down without finishing the first chapter. The main character’s mouth made me cringe with R-rated cursing, and she was a horrible person.

I’ve read many books where the main characters are assassins and considered people of bad reputation, but the writer kept it clean. Even in my Alissia Roswell Series, where I touch on alcoholism, child abuse, rape, and murder, it’s still a clean read.

I read half of a young adult werewolf book where the main characters spent a LOT of time completely naked while making out, but they couldn’t go through with sex until after their wedding ceremony. (Shaking my head in frustration.) Just because there was no actual sex, the author considers naked make out sessions a teen read. If her book was a movie, what rating would that get?

While volunteering at my daughter’s middle school book fair, two girls were standing behind me talking about books. One of them pointed to a book and said, “Fifty Shades of Grey right there. That book shouldn’t even be in here.”

While reading the reviews of a book I considered downloading for my daughters, a lot of the reviewers complained that the main teenage character had a low self-esteem from abuse. She then befriended a group of boys and winded up becoming “their girl.” Instead of choosing one boy, they shared her (which seems more abusive).

As for language, many self-published authors believe in “keeping it real.” They defend the heavy cursing in their young adult novels by saying, “All teens curse.” However, they fail to realize that most of the young adult books that make it to movies don’t have any curse words in them. They also fail to realize that many teens don’t want to be saturated with those words. They hear enough of them at school and often feel pressured to use them.

How can you be aware of what you’re purchasing for your teen–or yourself? Check the reviews on Amazon. I always go to the lowest ratings first to see if they’re complaining about the mature content. If I don’t find anything there, I’ll go on and read a few of the five-star ratings to see if they praise it for being a read for young and old. Some reviewers, like myself, specify what type of content they found in the book.

If you’re reading this and getting upset with me for trying to control what my children read, you should be aware that I’m also trying to control what I read. I don’t want to read intense sex scenes, and I honestly don’t want my children reading them, either. It really doesn’t have a place in our home, and I hope you’ll respect that. Please don’t spam me with your opinions and argument.

In fact, one of my daughters wrote in a book review on her Goodreads account that she felt uncomfortable reading a make out scene in a middle school book. I didn’t know anything about it until after I read her review. I’m not forcing her to stay away from those books. She’s choosing it for herself. We all have different opinions 🙂

Update on Alissia Roswell Series

Posted by on Jan 7, 2016 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and you’re settling into 2016. I’m back at my desk each morning and will be ending many of my days writing. Spring will soon be here, and I’m feeling the pressure with Unexpected Beginning. I’m waiting until I type out a certain scene before the designer begins on the cover. The cover reveal is tentatively scheduled for the beginning of March.

As for the second release of Unexpected Metamorphosis, I’m still waiting on feedback from my beta readers. I recently sent it to fourteen more readers and hope to hear from them soon. Most of my readers entertained guests over the holidays and have not had much time to read.

I’ve pulled back on marketing and social media and will continue to do so until the second release of Unexpected Metamorphosis. Right now, my focus is on finishing Unexpected Beginning and getting it ready for a June release.

Stay tuned for more updates, and you may want to check out my Facebook page. I often give hints into my day’s writing, and I always respond to my readers’ comments.

broken things to mendBroken Things to Mend by Karey White

***This book is part of a multi-author project that features one recurring character–the match maker–but it is a STAND-ALONE novel.***

Celia is in desperate need of a change–a change of scenery, a change of pace, and a complete redo of all relationships. Not knowing what else to do, she opens a map, closes her eyes, and lets fate decide her future. Then she packs her meager belongings and buys a one-way ticket to a little town on the fringes of Oregon’s Deschutes National Forest called Sisters. She’s wanted a family for years. Will she find one in Sisters?

What Celia doesn’t plan to find is a strange Chinese woman whose meddling ways keep throwing her in the path of a handsome, but reserved, forest ranger. But no matter how kind or dependable Silas seems to be, there are some things in Celia’s past that neither of them can escape, and this time, the damage might be too much to mend.

Happy New Year!

Posted by on Dec 31, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Hope you all had an amazing Christmas filled with love and laughter. I can tell many people are still on vacation, as the roads are clear of traffic each morning I’ve driven into Atlanta. Although my husband and children are home this week, we chose not to travel, and I got caught up around the house. The carpets are getting cleaned, the dreaded stacks on my desk are getting smaller, and I’ve gone through things. With the warm weather we had earlier this week, I opened the windows and let some fresh air in.

It’s New Year’s Eve, and I hope you get to spend it doing something you love. We introduced our children to Star Wars this week, and tonight we plan to watch the last one before taking them to see the latest movie in the theaters. With an early morning appointment tomorrow, I’ll probably be asleep at midnight. If not, I hope to be at my laptop doing what I love–writing.

Be safe! Enjoy your evening, and may you have a blessed New Year. Bring it in with a smile on your face 🙂

Roman's Holiday

Roman's holiday cover

Roman’s Holiday by Susan Aylworth

Four years after Roman Kincaid was catapulted into stardom as a country-western singer and A-list movie star, he is burned out: exhausted by a grueling schedule, drained by the ceaseless demands of producers and managers, weary of meeting the needs of others at the expense of his own. Leaving a sold-out show in Phoenix, he rents a car and drives north and east, landing in the Painted Desert town of Rainbow Rock.
Nearly three years after leaving her old life behind, Lottie Beale is feeding people and baking pies, managing the Kachina Café and tending secrets of her own. When circumstances conspire to give two attractive people some time alone together amid the world-class vistas of the Four Corners, they discover more than either had bargained for.
Excerpt:
Lottie broke in. “So? What now? You know my secret identity and I know yours. Shall we just go our own ways—no harm, no foul?”
He considered that. “I’m not sure. I mean, what did Batman and Catwoman do when they discovered each other’s secret identities?”
Lottie wrinkled her nose. “Try to kill each other?”
“Um, you’re right. Bad example. So whaddya think we should do?” A few interesting ideas had already occurred to Roman, but, for the moment at least, he chose to keep those to himself. “Are you thinking of mutually assured destruction? You tell my secret, I tell yours?”
“I don’t know,” Lottie said, “I think we can do better than that.”
“What then?”
“Hmmm…” She was giving him a different look now—speculative, perhaps, even conspiratorial. “It depends.”

The Secret Life of Daydreams Blast & $50 Giveaway

Secret Life of Daydreams

The Secret Life of Daydreams by Lucinda Whitney

Six years after a painful divorce, Josh Conrad is happy traveling the world as a photographer. When he arrives in Portugal, he plans to complete the assignment as quickly as possible. What he doesn’t plan for is Sofia, the girl he baptized eleven years earlier on an LDS mission, and soon he’s making excuses to prolong his trip.Sofia Monteiro leads a structured life in Braga, Portugal, teaching high school by day and caring for her mother by night. After she reconnects with Josh through mutual friends, the memory of a failed relationship and her new graduate program are enough reasons to stay away from him.

As they collaborate on a project, Josh is wary of repeating his old mistakes and Sofia hesitates to spend time with an American who’s only passing through.

Can two people with wounded hearts bring themselves to trust their dreams to each other?

amazon

Excerpt
Sofia walked back to meet Josh and they strolled together past the deck at the reception center and the start of the trail. She unfolded the map and held it up between them. She pointed at the spots of interest. “This is the suggested route. The main road goes up the hill to the western fortification wall. At the acropolis, there’s another wide road that intersects in the opposite direction.”

She circled several areas. “These areas are the residential nucleus and along the way we can see the remains of the round dwellings and the more common rectangular ones.” There was more but she looked up to Josh. “Are you okay with following this route?”

“I’m here to follow you.” He swept his right arm in front of her. “Just lead the way.”

Sofia straightened and pocketed the map. Josh carried too much and she hesitated. “Wouldn’t it be easier for you to use the equipment if I carry the backpack?”

He paused for a moment and surveyed the area then chuckled. “Sneaky, aren’t you? I know what you’re trying to do here.”

Why did guys always think they had to do everything to prove their virility? Such a macho thing. She splayed her hands on her hips. “It’s the twenty first century. I can carry my share. Besides, this is more like a business outing, not a date. Which means you don’t have to carry stuff for me.” She extended her hand for the backpack.

“What if I believe in chivalry? You won’t give me a chance to practice it?”

“And what if I’m a feminist? You won’t respect my views?” She was pushing him now and enjoying the banter.

Josh eyed her and held quiet, the corner of his mouth twitching. Sofia wanted to laugh. He was probably trying to figure out how serious she was about feminism. After a few seconds, he set down the tripod and removed the backpack, but his eyes crinkled with a lack of seriousness belied by his actions.

Sofia took the backpack from him and put it on. It wasn’t even as heavy as she’d expected. “See? That wasn’t so hard, was it?” She started up the trail then turned back to Josh. “And you still have your man card intact,” she added with a smile.

Josh laughed. “Sassy, aren’t you?”

“Come on, we don’t have all day,” she pressed in a teasing tone.

“This book was a delightful journey. I loved getting to know Josh and Sofia, cheering for them, growling at them, and sharing a happy sigh or two with them. The gorgeous setting of Portugal was an added bonus!”– Alison Woods
