I wishI Wish by Elizabeth Langston

What Lacey needs is a miracle. What she gets is a genie with rules.

Lacey Linden is hiding the truth of her life—a depressed mom, a crumbling house, and bills too big to pay. While her high school classmates see a girl with a ready smile and good grades, Lacey spends her evenings seeking ways to save her family. On a get-cash-quick trip to the flea market, Lacey stumbles over a music box that seemingly begs her to take it home. She does, only to find it is inhabited by a gorgeous “genie.” He offers her a month of wishes, one per day, but there’s a catch. Each wish must be humanly possible.

Grant belongs to a league of supernatural beings, dedicated to serving humans in need. After two years of fulfilling the boring wishes of conventional teens, he is one assignment away from promotion to a challenging new role with more daring cases. Yet his month with Lacey is everything that he expects and nothing like he imagines. Lacey and Grant soon discover that the most difficult task of all might be saying goodbye.

Praise for I Wish

From School Library Journal (I Wish #1)

Langston wisely limits the power of wishes, so there can be no easy fixes to complex problems. [The story] is all the better for it, putting the focus on the compelling and sympathetic characters.

… the denouement offers enough twists and unresolved questions to have readers wishing the next book was already available.

From K-books blog:

I Wish is a fantastic storyline, with a dash of romance that is perfect for any YA fan. I can’t recommend it enough.

From Reese’s Reviews blog:

This is definitely one of the most beautiful and amazingly written books I’ve ever read. Elizabeth Langston has written a fantastic story that drew me in from the first page.

Excerpt from Wishing For You

There was a pounding on the bedroom door. My eyes fluttered open to find sunlight streaming into the attic.

Lacey groaned. “What is it, Henry?”

The door creaked and then banged against the wall. “Did Kimberley sleep over?”

“Does it look like she’s in this room?”

“Yes.”

“Then she did sleep over.”

“Cool.” Lacey’s younger brother ran over to my side of the bed and plopped cross-legged on the floor. “Do you want breakfast?”

I turned my head toward him, trying to focus. “Yes, I do.”

“Mom is making pancakes. Do you like them?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Bacon?”

“One of my favorites.” I could smell it in the air.

“Good. It’s one of mine too. Will you be ready to eat soon?”

I clapped a hand over my mouth to keep from snorting. Lacey had the most adorable little brother ever. “Is your mom making you wait until we come down?”

“Yes, she is.”

“Give us ten minutes to get dressed.”

“Ten? That sounds like a lot.”

“Seven, then,” I said in a firm voice.

He rose and ran from the room.

Beside me, Lacey laughed. “You handled that very well.”

“How do you keep from laughing every time you talk to him?”

“Practice.”

We were ready in six minutes and were about to head down the stairs when Lacey caught my arm. “Do you know where Sean went for Christmas?”

“I don’t think so.” I grabbed my phone and opened my notes. “What made you think of that?”

“It’s been puzzling me. Mrs. Tucker and Sara kept their consignment shop open until Christmas Eve. Did his father go with him?”

“Yes.” Lacey was right. It had felt strange when Sean mentioned it. But if I’d asked other questions, he hadn’t answered because my notes only had the one detail. “Maybe he was visiting colleges.”

“Someone like Sean would already have that decision made. Has he said where he’s applying?”

I shook my head helplessly. It seemed like the kind of information a friend should know, but nothing was emerging from the recesses of my brain.

“Hey, guys,” Henry called up the stairs. “It’s been seven minutes.”

Lacey called back, “On our way, little man.”

We smiled at each other. There were pancakes waiting. We’d have to solve the Sean puzzle later.

Excerpt
Suddenly, the area all around her began to glow, as if some hidden light behind her was slowly coming to life. Thin pine and tupelo trunks were painted in a fiery red light, bright enough that each tree cast a threatening shadow. The creature was near. She ran left, thinking about her family and blinking away stinging hot tears. She hoped to see them again. She hoped to tell her husband and her daughter how much she loved them both. Her body, numb, expected death at any moment but she refused to give in. Ahead, she could see an end to the forest. And something else …
A fence! An old fence whose links were being pulled earthward by heavy vines with thick stalks and fat, crescent-shaped leaves. And beyond the fence: a dim pool of white light illuminated a squat building at the far edge of a barren lot. The building must be an emergency supply depot, no doubt running solely on stored energy from the solar panels attached to the roof, slanted up at the sky. The depot would contain emergency equipment and maybe some kind of weapon. It would have a communication system, too.
She could jump the fence. She could take one step on the constrained chain links and reach the top and hop over. She could reach the building. She could survive. She’d carried a child in her womb for nine months, seven days and an additional fifteen excruciating hours of labor. Her back had endured. Her legs had endured. This pain she felt in her shins now? It was nothing. It was an annoyance.
She could do this. She could send a warning

Praise for the Book

As soon as I started reading this book, I could not put it down. It was a really pleasant reading, fresh, funny, witty, very well written with a great peace and lovable characters.

I enjoyed reading See You Soon Broadway. In fact, I finished it in two days; I could hardly put it down.

With great characters to build on, this story grabbed me.

This is the first book that I have read by this author, but it will not be the last.
If you enjoy reading sweet romance, then definitely pick this up!

Excerpt

I’m must still be daydreaming as I quickly turn around and run smack into a man spilling his drink all over his obviously very expensive suit.

“Oh crap! I’m so sorry,” I yell. I start brushing my hand along his suit coat. Crap, what am I doing touching this man? I finally glance up at his face and wow—tall, dark hair, and very…um…masculine. I must be staring because I don’t even realize that I’m still brushing the front of his coat and now his pants. I’m beyond humiliated now.

“Please don’t worry. It’s fine.” He smiles, holding up his hands. “I mean, it’s only a brand new suit, but hey that’s what dry cleaners are for, right?”

“Um, right.” I hesitate. “Sorry for um, brushing, um.” Really, Maris, shut up, I think to myself.

He holds out his hand. “Trevor Ericson.”

“Hi, I’m Maris Forrester.” I shake his hand and smile thankfully. I really appreciate him changing the subject from my invading his personal space.

“Maris? That a nickname?” he asks curiously.

“No, a family name actually; I’m named after my grandmother.” He has managed to find a few cocktail napkins lying around and he wipes off his coat.

“That’s a cool name. So, how do you know the Phillips?”

Phillips? What’s he talking about?

“The Phillips?” I ask, trying not to cringe that I was rubbing the front of his suit for what seemed like five minutes.

“Yes, Tom and Liv, our hosts for this event?” He seems shocked that I have no idea who Tom and Liv are. I guess I should know that but too late now. Suddenly, I feel guilty like I just crashed a wedding or something.

“Oh right, I don’t actually—we were invited by a mutual friend. It’s a great party though,” I say as I glance around.

“Yes, they do this every year to benefit the arts. It’s such a shame so many schools are removing them from their schedules. Liv, of course, has such a passion for this cause being that she’s also a musician. She’s performed all over the world.”

“She was a performer?” I ask excitedly. “That’s fantastic. I’m a singer, too, or at least I was, now I’m a vocal instructor.”

“Really? That’s interesting, why don’t you sing anymore?”

Should I be having this conversation with a perfect stranger? He just keeps asking me questions. I probably shouldn’t be rude considering I just spilled alcohol over his Armani suit. Okay, so I don’t know for sure that it’s Armani, maybe Versace? I’m not exactly up-to-date on what designers men are wearing being that Kyle is more of a Gap kind of guy.

“You know how it is, life I guess. Anyway, where did Liv perform?”

“With some orchestra, she’s an amazing violin player. I went to college with Tom, we were fraternity brothers.”

I roll my eyes, figures that Trevor was a frat boy. He’s totally charming and outgoing, he was probably the president, too.

“Did you just give me an eye roll?” he asks playfully. I guess that was pretty obvious.

I laugh. “Yes. I was just thinking that I could totally see you being a frat boy.”

He cracks a smile. “I take offense to that, but I guess the choir girls don’t really like frat boys do they? I may have to send you my dry cleaning bill after all.” I start to feel uncomfortable. My amazing boyfriend is somewhere around here waiting for me and I’m chatting (not flirting) with some random frat boy.

Update on the Alissia Roswell Series

Posted by on Oct 6, 2015 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Just thought I’d give a quick update on the Alissia Roswell Series. Most of you all know I decided to go back through my debut novel, Unexpected Metamorphosis, and update it to my current writing style. What I thought would be a quick editing job turned into a thorough edit. The plot is and was perfect, but I changed and rearranged many of the words to give more strength and emotion to the story. Although it’s receiving great reviews, I do not feel that my first novel conveys my current writing style, as I’ve grown a lot over the past few years, and I want it to be as strong as my other novels.

I will soon write a post with a few examples of the changes so that you can see for yourself what I mean. I am currently working on the last chapter.

Unexpected Beginning is dying to come out, and I can’t wait to dive into this part of Alissia’s adventure. I have many stories keeping me up at night, and my creative side is burning within me. It’s time to get back to it!

This weekend I will be blessed with a writing binge, and I’ll have the entire weekend to myself to do nothing but write. It’s the perfect way to get back into my writing, and I can’t wait!

Stay tuned! I’ll try to give a few insights into Alissia’s new adventure while writing.

Broken Wings (Angel Eyes #2) Book Review – Christian YA

Posted by on Sep 30, 2015 in Book Reviews | 0 comments

Broken Wings is the second book in the Angel Eyes Series, written by Shannon Dittemore, and it continues with the story of Brielle and Jake. I really like this series, as it’s unique and original. The author attempts to give us an idea of the spiritual warfare going on around us that we cannot see. It is a strong Christian read–not subtle. The main characters deal with many of the bad situations by praying and trying to stay strong in their faith.

I love how the first book dealt with the sex trade industry, and this one introduces alcoholism. This series touches on some harsh realities and has romance, yet it’s clean enough for older middle schoolers. The violence is not gory. The romance is sweet and done in a Christian way, and the touchy topics are handled delicately. This series is truly a positive, Christian read.

The only negative about this book was the ending. The first book had a story within itself, yet this one just seemed to get started toward the end. Luckily, the third book in the series is out, so you can easily resume the story. It didn’t end on a cliffhanger. It just didn’t end with a finish. It felt like it was in the middle of a scene.

I still give this book four stars, and I’ll definitely read the third book in the series. I’ll pass it on to my children, and I’ll continue to recommend this series to others who enjoy Christian fantasy.
